The internet has completely changed the way we search and apply for career opportunities. In order to survive, you must have an internet friendly resume. That way your resume looks good when you submit it to a companies applicant tracking tool, without changing the formatting or look of the document. The following 5 tips will ensure your success.

  1. Contact information - Be sure to include all of your contact information on your resume. This includes mailing address, cellular phone, home phone, work phone if appropriate, and personal email address. Email is preferred by most recruiters, so be sure to include a professional email address and make sure you check it often.
  2. Tailor your resume - Make sure that your resume includes all of the key words in the job description. Make sure to objectively review your resume against the job requirements and ensure that the required skills jump off the page. Recruiters read hundreds of resumes, spending on average 20 seconds on each, make sure you capture there attention.
  3. How to save/send your resume - Recruiters are receiving and reviewing hundreds of resumes at a time, so make it easy on them by saving your document as your name.doc. Make sure that your resume is either in word format .doc), or a .pdf file. No other file format should be considered.
  4. Proof read your resume - Nothing makes a worse first impression than misspelled words, typos, or grammatical errors. This will disqualify you as an applicant before you even have a chance. Make sure to have multiple people proof read your resume to ensure it is correct.
  5. Review the resume format before you click submit - When submitting your resume online, the format will often change due to how the company's applicant tracking software interprets the document. Make sure you proof read your resume thoroughly, before you click submit.
